Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens has yet to win on the road and yet to lose at night.

A decision for him will end one of those streaks Tuesday night, and Jurrjens hopes its his winless run on the road as the Braves look to end the Houston Astros’ six-game home win streak.

Jurrjens (4-4, 4.48 ERA) has been an enigma with a 4-0 mark and a 2.02 ERA in six night starts that have mostly been at home. On the road, he’s 0-4 with a 7.63 ERA in six outings that have mostly been during the day.

The right-hander was victorious Thursday against San Francisco, allowing two runs over six innings in a 3-2 win.

Jurrjens went two innings and gave up one run before leaving due to a lengthy rain delay in a 5-1 loss in his lone career start against the Astros on May 2, 2009.

Houston (48-63) is enjoying its longest win streak at home since a nine-game run Aug. 27-Sept. 11, 2008, after taking advantage of sloppy Atlanta defense in a 10-4 win Monday to open this three-game set. The Braves (64-48) committed three errors to bring their NL-worst total since the All-Star break to 23.

Atlanta has 15 errors in its last 10 games. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez has five in that span after turning in 13 straight errorless games to start his Braves career following his acquisition from Toronto on July 13.

Atlanta’s lead atop the NL East was cut to 1 1/2 games over Philadelphia.

Chris Johnson singled twice and drove in three runs to continue his surge for Houston, which ended a four-game skid. The rookie third baseman is hitting .444 with five homers and 22 RBIs over his last 19 games.

“It’s definitely a good situation on our team when we can get guys on base for (Johnson),” second baseman Jeff Keppinger said. “He’s been coming through big for us.”

Houston’s J.A. Happ (2-1, 4.03) has had vastly different results in his first two starts with his new club. The Astros acquired him from Philadelphia on July 29 in the Roy Oswalt deal, and Happ gave up two hits in six innings the next day in his Houston debut – a 5-0 victory over Milwaukee.

The left-hander turned in a completely different result in his first road start with the Astros. Happ allowed a career-high seven runs over one-plus inning in an 8-4 loss to St. Louis on Wednesday.

“It just didn’t seem like he was able to make adjustments,” manager Brad Mills said.

Happ is 2-0 with a 1.78 ERA in five career starts against the Braves. He’s limited Chipper Jones to three hits in 13 at-bats, and Jones is 13 for 36 over his last 10 games with three straight multihit efforts.

The Astros starter also will get his first look at rookie right fielder Jason Heyward, who homered on his 21st birthday Monday for just his fifth hit in 35 at-bats. Heyward is 6 for 13 with three homers and seven RBIs in four games against Houston this year.

Final Day Of Tax Free

The Ramirez family did some serious shopping this weekend.

All Friday night and most of Saturday and Sunday they were trying on shoes and clothes, looking for the best deals in back-to-school styles.

It was no coincidence that this was Oklahomas annual tax holiday weekend.

Weve gotten a lot of stuff, said Melody Ramirez. The basics you need every day.

Sunday found Ramirez and her three children 9, 11 and 14 in the school supplies section of Target, 1701 S. Yale Ave. They were debating backpack styles and determining what would make the cut into the shopping cart.

Ramirez said the family has come into Tulsa from their Verdigris home every day this weekend to take advantage of the tax break. Theyve saved quite a bit of money this back to school shopping season, which is always a jolt to the pocketbook, she said.

Before you realize what youve done, youve spent $700-$800 and your in shock, she said.

They try to set budgets, but the children can get specific about what clothes and accessories they need, she said.

I have a 14-year-old going into high school, she said. Weve got to have the latest styles and name brands.

Sunday was the last day of the holiday, when the state doesnt require retailers to collects sales tax on certain items, namely shoes and clothes less than $100.

Stores extended their hours and threw in extra sales and discounts to get shoppers inside and spending.

The average family

is expected to spend about $600 on back-to-school items, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation.

The JCPenney store at Woodland Hills Mall, 71st Street and Memorial Drive, had a large crowd of customers all day, said store manager Gary Rowlett.

“We’re doing very well and are very satisfied with the traffic flow,” he said.

The tax-free incentive has tripled the normal back-to-school crowd, and customers have said it feels like the Christmas season, he said.

The children’s clothing sections are the busiest, and shoppers are pleased to have a bit of a price break, Rowlett said.

“I think it’s very important to the consumer,” he said.

Rachel and Magnum Faust were in the toys section of Target looking for a birthday gift Sunday, but they planned to return to buy the clothes that their son, 8-year-old Kaden, needs for his school uniform.

They, too, are glad for the tax break that helps them save, although they would prefer that it included regular school supplies.

Every year the (school supplies) list gets longer, Magnum Faust said. Youve got to shop around and get the best prices.

Murray & Sharapova Attain Last In Unconvincing Fashion

Brit Andy Murray and Russian Maria Sharapova have both reached their respective finals at the LA Open, albeit in unconvincing displays.

United States, the 31st of July 2010: Tournament top seed and world number four Andy Murray won a typically topsy-turvy encounter against Spaniard Feliciano Lopez to reach the LA Open final on Saturday.

Attempting to gain his first ATP title of the year, Murray won through to the final in just over 90 minutes at the LA Tennis Center. The match finished 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.

Sweeping through the opening set with a sparkling array of shot-making and agile movement, Murray then succumbed to an all to regular lapse in concentration or bout of overconfidence to lose the second in inexplicable style.

Once again, the tide turned in the third, Murray pouncing on a 5-3 lead to take the match away from the equally uninspiring Lopez.

Murray will now take on second-seeded Sam Querrey in Sundays final, the big-serving American having battled past Serbian Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 7-6 6-4 in front of his hometown crowd.

Meanwhile, hard-hitting Russian Maria Sharapova overcame a first set nightmare against Pole Agnieszka Radwanska. Sharapova, also bidding for her first title of the year, eventually took the match 1-6 6-2 6-2.

Sharapova will face Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the final, who celebrated her 21st birthday in style earlier by overwhelming top seeded Australian Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-3.

Man Accused Of Burglarizing Home Of Woman In Hospital

A 20-year-old man is in jail after being accused of breaking into the house of
a hospitalized neighbor, allegedly stealing her $2,000 TV.

“It’s sad,” Clayton police spokeswoman Lt. Tina Daniel told The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday. “It was common knowledge she
was in the hospital.”

Logan Wilson was shot in the face, shoulder and leg while she was celebrating
her 21st birthday, police said. She was dancing on a car in front of her
house on Maggie Lane in Jonesboro when a car drove by and someone inside
shot her, authorities said. She has been in a hospital since July 11.

Duaneyae Philip A. Gibson was arrested about an hour after the burglary on
Tuesday, Daniel said. A neighbor called police after allegedly seeing him
take the TV from Wilson’s house.

“The suspect’s mother was very, very … helpful once it was determine
what had happened,” Daniel said.

Gibson is being held in the Clayton County jail on a $35,000 bond.

According to records, Gibson completed a year on probation for shoplifting
Feb. 15.

Ied Survivor Makes Future Plans

A significant event for most young men is the day he turns 21, and that day is often spent with friends at some place where proof of age is necessary.

But when a 21st birthday comes around in a foreign country and you’re in uniform, coming of legal age seems a bit less important.

For National Guard Spc. Matthew Lewandowski, the milestone came just one month after he and four of his Dark Horse comrades were blasted by an improvised explosive device — or IED — attack in Iraq.

The young men were already old enough to die for their country’s freedom.

Lewandowski, of Oak Ridge, and other members of the 278th Armored Calvary Regiment, Tennessee Army National Guard returned home from Iraq earlier in July after being deployed to Iraq several months ago.

They spent their Fourth of July in the air en route to the United States.

Before that, they were on a mission … convoy security.

“We escort civilian contractors,” Lewandowski explained. “We also helped shut down two FOBs (forward operating bases) while we were there.”

What they do, this group called the Dark Horse soldiers, is man an MRAP or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle.

“We push about two clicks in front of the convoy,” said Lewandowski, meaning they traveled a specific distance in front of the convoy.

Why? Because the MRAP is the vehicle that sweeps the road for IEDs. “We determine what is bad,” the specialist said.

And one day in March, one of those homemade roadside bombs proved how bad it can be.

Lewandowski’s MRAP was hit by a 210 mm artillery shell. The 14-ton MRAP held its ground and only one of the Dark Horse soldiers was injured.

“The gunner sustained some minor injury,” the local soldier explained.

That IED blast came just a few weeks before Lewandowski’s 21st birthday on April 4.

On April 19, he and his fellow Dark Horse unit members — Sgt. Donald Buckner, Spc. Benjamin Elkins, Pfc. Christopher Thompson and Spc. Solomon Walker — were awarded Combat Action Badges for their courage and professionalism in combat operations.

“We did our jobs very well,” the young soldier said.

“I’m happy we all came home safely.”

Lewandowski is now gearing up for another stint — this time at Pellissippi State Community College. He said he should have time to complete his schooling because his troop should get a four-year break before being deployed again.

The specialist will also continue as a “weekend warrior” with the Guard, something he has been doing since signing up at the age of 18 — just six days after his birthday.

“I wanted to get on board as soon as I was legal age,” he said.

Lewandowski came to Oak Ridge from Michigan with his parents, Angela Collins and Michael Lewandowski, when he was a teenager.

“Dad came here to work,” he said.

“I like it way better (than Michigan).”

Get Together Erupts Right Into A Brawl

Witnesses described what happened next, but they didn’t have the names. They referred to the men by their features: Buzzcut and Clown Tattoo.

Buzzcut grabbed a wooden stick a furniture leg, or maybe a baseball bat and whacked Johnathan Sheeks, 16, in the head until he collapsed.

Clown Tattoo pounded on Jade Williams, 19. Buzzcut smashed a beer bottle on Williams’ head.

An all-out melee ensued at 12807 Tinley Road, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Another guest took a blow to the head. Yet another was slammed in the back and the leg. When the birthday girl tried to break up the brawl, Buzzcut rapped her wrist with the wooden stick.

Three bleeding guests ran into the house.

“The guys went nuts on everybody,” one of them told Lisa Chiaramonte, the birthday girl’s mother.

Chiaramonte, 49, told Buzzcut and Clown Tattoo to leave. They ignored her and kept fighting.

So Chiaramonte’s live-in boyfriend, Bryant Leggett, 51, retrieved his shotgun and went outside.

Leave, he ordered.

Shoot us, they replied.

Buzzcut then grabbed the gun and tried to pull it from Leggett’s hands. Lisa Chiaramonte jumped into the struggle, and the gun butted her in the head. Clown Tattoo hit Leggett over the head, and Buzzcut took the shotgun.

The duo jumped into their girlfriends’ cars and took off.

Deputies responded shortly after midnight to sort out who started the fight and why. They concluded Buzzcut was Eddie Davis, 20, and Clown Tattoo was Kurtis Carman, 21. As best they could tell, “there (was) some jealousy over Vanessa between the suspects and some of the male victims,” according to a report.

They caught up with Carman two hours later. A police dog found him hiding under a tree outside his girlfriend’s house, according to the sheriff’s report.

Deputies also called Davis’ mother, and asked her to have her son contact them. He agreed to meet authorities Wednesday afternoon at his mother’s house, where he was arrested.

Davis, of 13115 Sheridan Drive in Hudson, was charged with one count of robbery, two counts of aggravated battery and four counts of simple battery. He remained Friday at the Land O’Lakes jail in lieu of $30,600 bail.

Carman, of 7018 Bougenville Drive in Port Richey, was charged with aggravated battery and simple battery. He remained Friday at the Land O’Lakes jail in lieu of $10,150 bail.

Matt: Oh no! [laughs] Is there a spell that can make you invisible or is it just the cloak? Someone help me out! I see people nodding and saying Yes, its just the cloak. Um, to disarm people? Expelliarmus! Yes, and I can say that one!

Fan: [In your opinion] which is better, the books or the movies?

Matt: Oh. Thats not a fair question! There are pros and cons to both! The books are amazing. Then again, some people like the movies more. Like my dad, hes more for the movies rather than reading. I just hope weve done the best to convey the story. For me, the books are brilliant. And the movies! [laughs]

Fan: [Whatre] some fun things you do off set?

Matt: Well, Ruperts room is the game room. Hes just got everything in there, like Guitar Hero, a pool table, a dart board. You can have a lot of fun in there. Obviously, we cant do sports because we can get hurt and thats not good.

Also, we have heavy makeup done in some scenes. I had two hours worth of makeup done on me for one scene (blood, etc) and I felt so bad for the woman because it was practically an art piece! So, yeah, another reason why we cant play sports because well get sweaty and itll smear off. Tom and I have some guitar jam sessions, as we both play guitar.

Fan: Do we get to see Nevilles nan? Do you cut off the serpents head, as in the book?

Matt: [pauses] [laughs] Well. There is a lady who has been cast as his nan. [pauses again] I have met her on set. [laughs] Thats all I can say. As for the snake, all I can say is that weve stuck to the book as much as possible! [grin]

Fan: [Whatre] youre first memories and thoughts on set?

Matt: Well, my first memory is my re-call audition with Chris Columbus. It was amazing to get the re-call and go into the studio and onto the Gryffindor common room set. We practiced Nevilles I cant let you do this scene, Chris with Harry, Ron and Hermione. On my first day, they were filming the scene outside the castle for Madam Hoochs broom flying lessons.

I was so nervous and terrified because this was the scene that Neville flies off on the broom, and they were talking about strapping me in and all that. I was only 11 years old, I had only met Dan, Rupert and Emma once so I was so nervous about it all! And its only when they say action do you realize that everybody is watching you.

Fan: If you were an animagus, what animal would you be?

Matt: I want to be something really cool. Dolphins are cool! I went swimming with dolphins a couple of weeks ago. Can you be a T-rex? Nowhere does it say that you cant! [laughs] Id probably be a sloth, something that moves like an inch an hour, or something like that.

Fan: [Im going to cheat and ask two questions!] Is it worrying to have a large part of your life come to an end? Have you been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter?

Matt: Well, we all knew it was going to end. Everyone expects you to be really sad but I can say that I had a blast. I mean, I was always around and always working in the last couple of movie-

[Fan from the audience gets up to exit the hall]

Matt: Hey! Where do you think youre going?! Did you see that? [audience laughs and fan smiles] Unbelievable! No, Im kidding. Yes, so, I dont like that Im unemployed! And yes, Ive been the the Wizarding World of Harry Potter twice a bit greedy of me[laughs]. Ive been once for the run through of how the rides work and to go through everything (I dont know why, really).

All I can say is that it was unbelievable! Theyve recreated everything to detail, even Dumbledores office! You will have to queue for some time, but even the queue is made to be entertaining and part of the ride. There are portraits that move along with you and talk and all! There were some of everybody, like Hermione (etc.).

I watched Michael Gambon (Professor Dumbledore) watch his own moving portrait! It was the most surreal thing! [laughs] And before I had gone to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter I had been at the Kennedy Space Center and there was a man who had been working there for 20 years had been around every shuttle for the past 20 years!

Fan: If you had the chance, what would you nick off the set?

Matt: Oh, Ive nicked loads! [grins] [audience laughs] Definitely the Sword of Gryffindor. Ive been using it [pauses] oops. [silence] [audience laughs] Ive been around it. Dan and I have been trying to take it. I almost killed someone with it!

Fan: If a director asked you to play a character of your choice from any book [of your choice], who would you pick?

Matt: Does it have to be from a book? Er, something of a James Bond style. Yeah, James Bond! Just because theres been so much action in the last couple of movies and this year, its been so much fun! I wouldnt want to do it all my life, but one entire action movie would be fun! Or a war film.

Fan: Of all the people you have worked with, who has star struck you the most? Whats the best thing youve done as a result of [this] movie?

Matt: Rik Mayall, who was cast as Peeves the poltergeist but was unfortunately cut out. He was just awesome! I was a fan of Drop Dead Fred and a lot of other movies I probably wasnt supposed to be watching at 11 [years old].

I remember the first time I met him I was sitting next to him on the set of the first movie and he had asked me, Is this your first movie? and I had said Yeah so he told me to Get to know the sound guy and I asked What? Why? he just replied [Shshshsh] just do it. See him over there? so I went ahead and pointed and asked What, in there? only to be snapped at by him Dont point!! [laughs]

He was just hilarious, [and] an idiot! He made us laugh on set while we were supposed to be doing the serious scenes [and] nobody could focus because we were all laughing! I met Paul McCartney and watched him play [a concert] and all I could really think was Oh my God, thats a Beatle in front of me! Afterwards, I was watching him have a beer and talk about John, George and Ringo. It was just surreal.

[Matt clears his throat] Sorry, Ive also got a bit of a soar throat. Excuse me

Fan: Who [of the cast] has the craziest ideas?

Matt: What, like pranks? Well, James, Oliver and Rupert had a game although I dont think Rupert liked it much and once youre involved, youre involved forever. Theyll probably kill me for telling you [laughs] They take an object and hit it into the groin as hard as they can anything from bottles of water, oranges [etc]!

Now, youre a woman so the amount of sheer pain it causes probably wouldnt be the same trust me, it hurts. As for me, Ive only been a part for a brief time before I backed out, but theyve been playing it for years! It horrible! [laughs]

Fan: I collect AVAs. Can I have your sunglasses?

Matt: No. [audience laughs]

Fan: What?! Youre supposed to be the nice one!

Matt: No, let me explain! This is my third pair! Ive lost a pair at the Leeds festival, Ive lost another in my own car, so Ive spent quite a bit on sunglasses! Whatve you collected so far?

Fan: Well, Ive got the free ones from the Wireless festival -

Matt: The free ones?! From the Wireless festival?! Did you hear that? [audience laughs] Unbelievable!

Fan: Who will you stay friends with for years ahead?

Matt: Oh, a lot of people. When I my 21st [birthday], everyone came up to Leeds and Oasis was playing. It was nice. See, the thing is [laughs] Ruperts so laid back that if he loses my number and I lose his and we bump into each other 20 years on, itll be like nothing changed! Dan, definitely. And Alfie [Alfred Enoch Dean Thomas]. So yeah, those guys.

Paedophile Faces Life Sentence For Catalogue Of Abuse

Former Glasgow University microbiology student Andrew Byrne preyed on 19 youngsters, girls and boys, during a 22-month period.

At the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday, a judge was told Byrne, who appeared on his 21st birthday, now accepted an Order for Lifelong Restriction was inevitable after a risk assessment report.

Such sentences are reserved for the most serious sexual and violent offences, short of murder. A judge sets a minimum prison term and, if the offender is later released, he remains under supervision for life.

A psychologist who prepared the report on Byrne warned that he posed a very high risk of reoffending and may attack an adult or child, potentially leading to the loss of life.

But defence counsel Brian McConnachie QC argued that this assessment might be a step too far in considering what would be the future for Byrne.

Byrne, formerly of Glasgow, earlier admitted 32 charges, including underage sex, indecency, breaching child protection and prevention of sex offending legislation, and child pornography possession and distribution.
He contacted children in Scotland and England, using computers and social networking sites, and met some for sex.
Others were encouraged to undress and take part in sexual activity via webcams.

Byrne was caught after Central Scotland police launched Operation Defender aimed at snaring internet predators.

The operation began after a 13-year-old girl went missing in Clackmannanshire and it was discovered she had been contacted by a number of males.

The investigation found Byrne had targeted 11 girls and eight boys, aged between eight and 15.

He contacted a 13-year-old girl from Manchester and later took photos of her in various states of undress and showing explicit sexual activity.

He also went on to have underage sex with girls aged 13 and 15 in Glasgow, and recorded the abuse of an eight-year-old boy by his 15-year-old cousin from Renfrew-shire. The youth was sentenced to four-and-a-half years detention.

When arrested in July last year, 591 indecent images of children were found. Byrne admitted to police that he had downloaded weird stuff and added: I dont know why I keep doing it.

Advocate depute Gillian Wade said one victim said Byrne seemed obsessed with sex. She felt as if he was a teacher of sex.

Lord Brailsford said: This is clearly a most unusual and indeed very difficult case to sentence.

He continued the case until tomorrow to deal with Byrne.
